Sunday Video Picks

Posted by Cristiano Betta

It’s a slow day today as it is Sunday, so here are two video pick that might keep your mind busy for a while. Especially the first one (via FrankWatching) really got me thinking about where our current society is heading.

Regarding the machine is us(ing us): I said it before on my own blog I think, but: still the best presentation I’ve seen in a very long time.

The thing about the China presentation:

In those kinds of discussions, the central tenet of china’s ridiculous overpopulation (it’s a large country, yes, but a billion people?) is that it will mean they will become the next superpower or at least dominate because by basic statistics they have more geniuses.

I just don’t see it. As a general rule overpopulation is bad for your country’s development and economic power. You can alleviate that second one a bit by treating your citizens as third rate ‘resources’ you can exploit to your hearts content, and dump by the wayside once they cease being useful. However, that kind of harsh treatment tends to surpress the very genius and creativity you are trying to engender. The few that remain beacons of enlightenment in spite of the theme of inhumanity will probably move to other countries that treat them better.

The way out of this loop might be ridiculous levels of facism: kill or mistreat everything that isn’t “gifted” - but then you quickly get into definitions of ‘gifted’. There’s plenty of documentation available about the perils of going down this road.

You can try and institutionalize a state religion-like construct whereby the people are made to believe that their fundamental responsibility is to be a puppet in service of the state. China tries this to a large extent, but I get the feeling a country can’t grow into a progressing nation while maintaining such devotion to the state.

I was actually more impressed with the facts about the current society and that in 10 years. The facts about currently educating students for jobs that haven’t even been invented yet. I placed the post on http://teachr.tv before and the readers there really liked it.
