Mozy Backup Solution

Posted by Cristiano Betta

Mozy just released a very cool online backup solution for Mac OS X. For $4.95 a month you can get unlimited online backup, but their free version allows 2GB online backup which is enough for your basic documents. There are some cool features for Mac users including the backup of preferences, contacts, and e-mails. Files can be encrypted and if you have their payed unlimited account you can always order a backup of your files on DVD with next day delivery.

I recently lost some data in a harddisk-crash eventhough I make a 1 on 1 backup to a Firewire drive every week. Therefore I am looking into an easy solution for keeping my Documents backed-up online no matter where I am. So signup now and give their Mac or Windows client a try.

Isn’t the “free” only free per month? I believe the product itself costs 60 dollars, and I assume that any hacked or freeware version will not give you 2GB a month with no limit on bandwidth. (Only idiots would trust a backup hosting that they screwed out of their due, of course).

Still, 60 dollars is sooo worth it.

I’m strongly considering signing up. I currently run a backup to a remote server of the most important files on my system, keeping one version every 2 weeks as permanent reference, and every week or so I make a mirror copy to a firewire drive.

Not bad, and I suffered no ill effects the last time my harddrive just completely broke down (headcrash), but if someone breaks into my apartment or it burns down, I’m mostly screwed. I’ll still have my code bases (CVS + that important files backup) but that’s about it.

The only slight worry is that it’s in beta (1), and leopard’s focus on backups means it might be 60 bucks spent just to cover half a year (2).

The free version is $0 per month for 2GB online storage. That is a permanent 2GB online. It’s not that much but definetely enough for most of yout scans and documents.

I am now using the free version on a Mac and it doesn’t really feel like Beta. If you try it out, use the link on this page because I am trying to get some extra deals for FS ;)
