FourStarters Back to Work
It has been a while since we had some regular posts here on FourStarters. The main reasons being the holiday season, which obviously also affects us. Starting today I am planning to bring FourStarters back to speed with some interesting posts about startups, webapps, and any other software.
Next up we also plan to attend a few conferences in the next few weeks, starting with dConstruct and BarCampBrighton this week. Alper and Sjors start of by going to the dConstruct conference this week in Brighton (UK) after which they will join Melinda, Reinier and me at BarCampBrighton during the weekend.
We are hoping that Alper and Sjors are able to give us some live feedback from the dConstruct conference, including some nice photos. Highlights of the conference will be the workshops on Microformats, Experience Design, and more. I haven’t got word from Alper or Sjors yet on what workshops they were going to attend, but I guess it must be something interesting.
Although BarCampBrighton will be the first BarCamp in Brighton ever, it will definitely be a strange one with 5% of the attendees being Dutch. There were only 100 tickets available for this small and local BarCamp, so this way it is going to be an interesting experience for both us and the other people at the conference. At least with this amount of people it can’t be hard to have some live reports from the conferences.
We are hoping to see you all soon at any of the conferences.

September 3rd, 2007I’ve got the following topics more or less ready to go for a presentation at BCB. All of them will mention tipit at some point, but I’m having a hard time choosing one. Readers: Any preferences? (even if you’re not going):
- the past, present, and future of micropayments (including the ‘Sharky doctrine’ that in general fame wins from fortune which has so far killed all micropayment attempts, the practical transaction limits as they exist today, and for the future: iTunes-style “micro”payments and tipit).
- Server-Push (sometimes known as ‘comet’) overview/tutorial, including client side hurdles, the most reliable client-side method to solve the problem, the scaling issues on the server, and some examples of where it can be useful.
- GWT (google widget toolkit) tutorial.

September 4th, 2007I think that the server push, with some code examples, might be very interesting.

September 4th, 2007I think 1 could be very interesting from a disruptive/social point of view. And 2 more from a technical point of view.
Why not prepare both half and see which will be the better?
I’m thinking of releasing hAvatar on BCB. What little code there is, is nearing completion and it really does need public exposure to get going.

September 4th, 2007Since the current state of my laptop and camera, im a bit in doubt about the live photo and blog feed, but ill make sure to write a write up
As for brighton I’m thinking about a small presentation / discussion about how to create sites multi lingual at ease. (Although maybe no British people might care)

September 4th, 2007Well, there will be us, 5 Dutch people, and I know that there will also be a few Germans. In other words: the BarCamp is quite multilingual.
Maybe it is even more interesting for the British audiance as they would’t really know how or where to start in the first place. For us, localization comes quite natural.

September 4th, 2007@Sjors check out Stephanie Booth’s Reboot work for a good grounding in this stuff. There are lots and lots of issues with this stuff.
